Be careful if you have a rodent problem. Mint does detour the ants but it
attracts mice and voles.

I have heard that useing pepermint extract or oil will help to disuade ants
from comming into the house.  You put a line of it along your baseboards,
across threshholds, and anywhere you think they might be getting in.  It
does not kill them, I believe, but it does stop them from comming in. 

I have not ever used it, but have thought that this might work and be safe
for my animals.
