The Dutch have their sweet version called a krakelingen.

Simon Schama talks about them and their various appearances in paintings in The Embarrassment of Riches: 
saying, "The root of krakeling is krakeel, quarrel or fight, and when we know through antiquarian sources that small children pulled large krakelingen at each side in a little-finger tug-of-war similar to our practice with the wishbone of a chicken…"
