The Taqwim al-Sihha/Tacuinum Sanitatis lists both sweet and sour pomegranates. The words in both the original Arabic and the Latin are simply pomegranate (ruman/granata) and the adjective for sweet or sour. The illustrations in the Tacuinum are almost identical. All of which doesn't necessarily resolve the question of whether the sweet and sour pomegranates were different varieties or the same variety at different stages of ripeness.

I'll add that I recently purchased a packet of dried pomegranate seeds. To my palate, they taste pretty tart, but possibly that's just me.
