[Sca-cooks] hair cloth

Of the three grades I got the heavy one.
http://www.hawesandfreer.co.nz/product_fashion-fuse-firm-canvas.aspx#.UnnpOv
m4LFU It says 50% horse hair 50% cotton. 58cm wide because that's the
length of the horse hair. This is a site from the UK.
http://www.macculloch-wallis.co.uk/Product.aspx/TailoringCanvases!4181 They
say the weft is horse hair. 55cm.

Based on my sample it is very stable over the width, not so much the length.
It is still used by some tailors in shoulders of suit jackets for example.
And used by kilt makers. Many people skip this step. But it is to stop the
waist of the kilt stretching over time with the weight of fabric pleated in
the back. Of course with the range of alternative canvas, buckram, fuse and
interfacing these days it's a specially fabric. But should be available
from any tailors supply company, and some fabric stores.

So based on the descriptions above, and my sample I would say today the
width of the fabric is limited by the length of the horse hair. So it will
never stretch in that direction. But then they use another fabric in the
length of the cloth.

<<< Is this similar to the (horse) hair cloth ones buys now days? Although
the range and quality of hair cloth seems to be in decline from what gather.
I have bought the best I can find.

Where can/did you find (horse) hair cloth today?

What are you using it for? What is the going price today? It seems like it
would be rather difficult to make.

Thanks,
  Stefan
