"Columbian Exchange" is historian's shorthand for the transfer of people and
things between the New and Old Worlds following Columbus's landfall in the
West Indies. It's a simple label for a complex set of interactions, similar
to Friedrich von Richthofen's "Siedenstassen" (Silk Road(s)) as a label for
the interactions between Asia and the Mediterranean through Central Asia.
