Copper has reached the point that people are buying pennies by the roll and separating the older full copper pennies from later debased ones. Word is that they are worth about three cents a true copper penny. They are stealing air conditioners to the point that there is a burgeoning side industry in making theft proof cages. At Miami International Airport there was an attempt about 10 years back to steal copper from a huge transformer that was waiting on transport on the maintenance side of the airport. To big to steal and to hard to break apart they contaminate a portion of the area when they caused the toxic transformer fluid to leak out. Older houses that a vacant are being broken into and stripped of copper pipes.

When someone stole the copper downpipes from our church, they
replaced them with plastic pipe painted to match the missing copper.
Then someone stole the painted plastic pipes.
