Word is that they are worth about three cents a true copper penny. They are stealing air conditioners to the point that there is a burgeoning side industry in making theft proof cages. At Miami International Airport there was an attempt about 10 years back to steal copper from a huge transformer that was waiting on transport on the maintenance side of the airport. To big to steal and to hard to break apart they contaminate a portion of the area when they caused the toxic transformer fluid to leak out. Older houses that a vacant are being broken into and stripped of copper pipes.
