So, the venison tastes of coal smoke? :-)
<<< and the slipway for a rowboat that
was being taken in and out by other attendees at the event on the other
side - it was a great day).

I'm interested in any thinking folk have on the accuracy of spit roasting
for the Viking era; >>>
Sounds like it was a neat event and you had a lot of fun!
You can see them spit roasting meat in the Bayeau Tapestry, I believe. So roughly the same time period and culture.
In the TEXTILE ARTS section of the Florilegium. Some of the links there should include photos or drawings.
Bayeux-Tap-msg (40K) 3/ 1/08 The Bayeux Tapestry. Book reviews.

<<< it's a wonderful way to cook the meat, but it would be
far more economic to stretch it in stews or the like - and on the other
hand, roasting it requires no expensive pots or cauldrons. >>>
They might have saved the stewing for tougher, older animals. Or those that had been pickled or preserved in salt. We are after all talking about the upper class, not the peasants.

I’m glad your spit cooking experience turned out well. Sometimes, it can be more of an adventure than anticipated:
