<<< Sorry Stefan to hear about your health issues! Is it impossible to work
from home? I had a friend an engineer working for Cisco and he worked from
South America from his home computer…

I’ve been trying to work from home the past four years while on dialysis. Maybe I’m just not making the right connections for folks who would be willing to use my skills remotely. Since it is easier to do software remotely, I have been trying to move more from hardware engineering (board and systems design) to software (firmware and hardware-knowledgeable software) but it is hard to compete against software engineers fresh out of school.

What I’ve been looking for is some company or someone who needs both hardware and software skills that can capitalize on my 25 years of hardware development and let me increase my software skills.

Unfortunately, there are several companies in south Austin (AMD, Intel) that can use my hardware skills, but with my eyesight, driving 45 minutes or an hour past downtown isn’t viable. Austin traffic is getting worse and worse, much closer to that in Silicon Valley or LA than it was even ten years ago.
