The first actual Scandinavian cookbook is Kogebog in 1616, which appears to
be largely derived from Anna Wecker's Ein kostlich new Kochbuch (1597).
Libellus de arte coquinaria AKA the Harpestreng cookbook (13th Century) is a
manuscript collection of Western European recipes originally written in
Latin or French and translated into Middle Low German which was then
translated into Danish, probably by Henrik Harpestreng. No Viking era Norse
recipes.

What we know of pre-Christian Scandinavia cookery comes primarily from
interpretation of archeological finds. Stefan has already provide a starter
list of leads. You might also check The Viking Answer Lady website
http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/ .

So what are you thinking about doing with this knowledge?

Looking for a period Norse cooking manuscript, or what evidence we have on
pre-Christian cooked foods. Any leads?
