Very likely simnel, which is a bread of fine flour that is boiled then baked 
much as a bagel is.  Originally, it was filled with marzipan and evolved 
into a fruit cake.  The modern version is simnel cake.  The original is at 
least 13th Century, being noted in the Assize of Bread and Beer.

Somewhere I read a reference to stuffed bread that was closed and then
boiled.  I'll have to find it.
