Hi all!
Please forgive me if you receive multiple posts - I
just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that
the Ansteorran Heraldic and Scribal Symposium is
coming up on July 14.
SCRIBAL CLASSES
I have the great honor of coordinating the scribal
tracks for this event, and wanted to share with all of
you some of the wonderful classes that are planned:
* DESIGNING AWARD SCROLLS, taught by Mistress Stella
Silvana. Helpful hints for designing award scrolls,
both photocopied and original works.
* MAKING KINGDOM AWARD INSIGNIA, taught by Mistress
Stella Silvana. For those interested in the creation
of award insignia.
* WRITE YOUR NAME IN ARABIC, taught by Lord Mahee of
Acre. An introduction to Arabic calligraphy.
* ARABIC/ENGLISH ILLUSIONARY SCRIPT, taught by Lord
Mahee of Acre. An Arabic script that reads as English
but that uses actual Arabic letters.
* MAKING YOUR MARK, taught by Lady Suzanne de la
Ferte. Designing a mark to use as your signature.
* HERALDIC ART OR COLORING WITHIN THE LINES - Lady
Suzanne de la Ferte. How to draw at a consulting
table. What "They" are looking for and what works
well.
* DRAFTING FOR SCRIBES - HL Muireann a Dun Na Traighe
Ceine. Drafting techniques, tricks and tools to aid in
scroll design and layout.
* BASIC LETTER FORMS- Lady Lete Blithespring. A
discussion of basic calligraphy skills from a
long-time professional calligrapher.
* ANALYZING MANUSCRIPT HANDS - Lady Lete Blithespring.
Tips on how to look at, analyze, and reproduce a
period hand from a long-time professional
calligrapher.
* BAR BORDERS AND IVY VINES- Mistress Hillary Rose
Greenslade. Overview of historical illumination known
as 'bar border and ivy vines,' with hands-on
drawing/layout guidelines.
* COLOR PALETTES OF MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE ARTISTS -
Mistress Serena Lascelles. Basic information on period
pigments--which pigments are period and which are not,
what binders were used, and other information.
* GOLDLEAF AND GOLDLEAF TECHNIQUES - Master Geoff
Cathan. An introduction to gold leafing tools and
application techniques as applied to paper and vellum.
This is an extraordinarily talented group of artisans;
we are fortunate to have them come share their
knowledge with us.
OTHER SCRIBAL ACTIVITIES
In addition to the classes above, we will also have
some other fun scribal activities planned:
ALL-DAY CHARTER PAINTING. We'll have a room set aside
for charter painting throughout the day. Stay all day
or stop by between classes to paint charters for the
kingdom. Supplies provided.
SCRIBAL TEST, sponsored by Mistress Rose Cathan. Come
test your scribal knowledge! This will be similar to
the test Mistress Rose sponsored at Knowne World
Hearldic Symposium. The questions are pretty tough, so
study up! There will be a prize. :)
WHAT TO BRING
Some instructors are requesting a small donation to
help offset their cost of materials, so *please* bring
a little money to cover that. Bring paper and pen to
take notes in your classes. Also, feel free to bring
your paints, brushes, calligraphy pens, and ink - you
may get the chance to try them out in your classes or
at the charter painting table.
MORE INFO
There's lots more going on at this event than what
I've listed here. There are tons of great heraldic
classes planned, too, and more. More details about the
site and the event, including info about the heraldic
tracks, can be found online at
http://home.earthlink.net/~dmmerlick/AHSS/
I look forward to seeing everyone there!
Warm regards,
Sara Penrose
scribal class coordinator for AH&SS
