Bird paintings discovered dating from 1554-1562

They are by French illustrator Pierre Eskrich also known as Pierre DuVase
who fled religious persecution and painted the birds in Switzerland. There
are 218 paintings of birds(ornithological studies) in four leather bound
volumes.
In the 1700s the paintings went to England and in the late 18th century were
owned by Britain's duke of Devonshire.
sold at auction in London in the mid-1800s, and later given to the New York
Historical Society by Nathaniel H. Bishop, a Victorian-era naturalist and
explorer.
They are currently in an exhibit with Audubon paintings.
