Savoir Faire is the brand I have and they suit me fine. I am a painter (modern art) as well as
SCA art and I have had no problems with them. All my award scrolls never see direct sunlight.
I like W&N and Holbein as well, but if it is a choice between affording the paints and not...I will go for the less expensive ones.

There are two inexpensive sets that are considered 'student' grade paints, to use for 'color theory instruction and other educational purposes' according to Texas Art Supply website. Brand they use at Gulf Wars, called 'Reeve's. The one sold at some Texas stores, I think it's called 'Savoir Faire', on Texas Art supply, they call it 'the French School', for around $18 for a set of 10 and $30 for a set of 20 small tubes. They are washable and non-toxic. (good paints, depending on the color - can be toxic).
The student grades are ok to start, but may not be a light fast in quality or longevity or even in painting quality. Once you feel ready to move on or can afford it, try either the Windsor-Newton or the Holbein gouache's; or a better name brand.
You can do a lightfast test with some paint on a strip of paper in the window in direct light for several days to a few weeks - keep another test sample out of sunlight. Compare - does the one in the light have a color change? If so, that may occur on finished pieces when hanging on a wall in an award receipients home.

I bought my set of gouache from Hobby Lobby in Conroe.
They are not Windsor-Newton but they are good. They are
a French brand.

Some Michael's or Hobby Lobby's will carry a limited selection of W&N Gouache's at the bottom row of the WaterColor display for Windsor&Newton.
Else, you have to go to fine arts supply stores that might carry a large selection of artisan materials, some Universities will have them in their books stores for students.
Else, try online:
Texas Art Supply (in Houston area): http://www.texasart.com/
John Neal Books: http://www.johnnealbooks.com/ (supplies primarily for calligraphers and illuminators)
Paper and Ink Arts: http://www.paperinkarts.com/shop.html
Jerry's Ararama online: http://www.jerrysartarama.com/
Dick Blick: http://www.dickblick.com/
Daniel Smith: http://www.danielsmith.com/
Good luck, Hillary

You know what sucks? I inquired about goauche a few days ago at Hobby Lobby
and the had no idea what I was talking about. I looked a bit myself and
found nothing. Lake Charles, LA is a pain at times.
