Tivar mentioned "dragons" as a possibility and it generated a bit of
immediate resistance because of the prevalence of dragon "soup" already
in use ... there's another route to the same end-point
serpents = dragons (in the eye's a "diffusionist" looking at the symbols ...
they represent many of the same things and serpents are already linked
historically to this part of the world via the native cultures ...
and in mayan myth, wasn't it the "white bearded gods who traveled in ships
without oars" that brougth high culture to the america's, long, long ago ???
("... high on the mountain stands a boat, but are they gods or real folk? ..
horslips, book of invasions) ... images that were passed down in central
american myth until it met the spaniards via the aztec (quetzacoatl ...
sp???, not fluent in natal). love those "great circles" ... "feathered
serpents" and all that ... eagles and serpents ...
re: dragons ... while in west they usually represent "fire" attributes, they are
also the icons of deep waters and air (especially in the eastern cultures) ...
giving links to the land of the region and sky (a connection to the
ansteorran star ...) represent knowledge, connections to the "deep",
guardians, avatars ... could possibly work on a "phoenix" / "rising"
approach.
