The Barony of Bjornsborg announces an Academy of the Sword.
Long ago, in an age of Kings, Queens, valiant knights and fair
maidens, life was modeled upon a code of virtues - a code of chivalry.
Throughout our beloved Kingdom many hearts desire to follow the path of
the chivalric warrior. Yes, there is a hunger to learn, a reason to
teach, and a torch to pass. That is why the Barony of Bjornsborg is
pleased to meet the request of His Majesty and host an Academy of the
Sword on December 15-17th.
Come and share in the rich history of the most noble pursuit of
combat. Learn as Ansteorras most accomplished practitioners of the
military arts share their knowledge. Hone your skills both in the
classroom and on the field. A variety of arts and sciences will also be
provided for the education and diversion of the non-combatants; there
will be plenty to occupy all those who attend.
As the stars begin to glimmer Saturday night, you are cordially
invited to attend Bjornsborgs Yule Revel. A full evening of revelry,
toasting, boasting, singing and storytelling will assuredly ensue. What
better way to initiate the holidays than in the company of merry
friends? Bjornsborg welcomes everyone to join in the festivities.
Sunday will be highlighted by a marvelous Tournament in the Rapier
style hosted by the Ladies of the Rose. Our Barony is honored to assist
the Ladies of the Rose in creating what we hope becomes a treasured
tradition within our Kingdom!
A potluck feast is planned. Please bring a dish to share with 6 to
10 students/revelers. The site is Savernake Ranch on the eastern shores
of Medina Lake, about 20 miles Northwest of San Antonio. See map in
November Black Star. Camping is primitive. Please no pets. The site
is a wildlife refuge. Site Fee is $8.00 adults/$4.00 children 5-12 if
paid at gate guard, or $7.00/$3.00 if prepaid by December 1st. Minors
must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. They may also attend
with a 21 year old or older adult with a signed and notarized Minor
Event Waiver Form from their parents.

Directions to the Site (augmenting map in November Black Star) - Take
your best route to Loop 1604 North in San Antonio (coming from the
North, this is going to be I35 for most people). Travel West on 1604
(i.e., turn right from I35) past 281, I10, and 16 (Bandera Rd.) until
you come to FM 471 (note that 1604 narrows to two lanes 2 miles East of
471) Turn right on 471 (marked "Culebra" at the intersection; follow the
signs to Taft High School). Stay on 471 for around 8 miles, until it you
reach a flashing yellow light. This will be the intersection of 471 and
FM 1283. To stay on 471, you would actually be forced to turn left at
this intersection, but instead bear to the right. This will put you on
1283. Stay on 1283 for 7 miles, until you come to another flashing light
and a little store called "Hilltop Market." Turn right at this
intersection (stay on 1283).
After about 1.7 miles, you should come to a paved road (on your
right) called CR 270. This is actually the first paved right turn you'll
encounter after making the turn at the last flashing light. Turn right,
and continue about 0.2 miles until the road splits. Take the right hand
fork (our property begins on your right at the split). The first (paved)
entrance to our land is on your right about 100 yards past the split.
There's a sign there that says "Savernake," but you probably won't be
able to read it unless you deal well with Lombardic capital E's. The one
on the fence that says "Ferrell" should be a little more legible. Note
that our mailbox is across the street from the actual house.
