> So, roll up your sleeves to give blood, and get out your checkbooks.

Actually, the blood banks are asking people to WAIT for at least a week or
two, as they have as much blood right now as they can store. Unfortunately,
the great need for blood was not there, because there were so few injured.

Call ahead, don't just walk in, many people are being turned away. Blood
will be needed in the weeks to come, so if you cannot give now (and don't
have a permanent reason not to give), give later.

A number of businesses are collecting donations, including Minyard, Sack 'n'
Save, Cathy's Wok, and Reliable Chevrolet. You can also go online to places
like amazon.com, paypal.com, and sears.com to make a donation since the
American Red Cross' website is being overwhelmed.

By the way, if you do want to give THINGS, Wolf-99.5 radio is collecting
bears for the children who were orphaned on Tuesday. These should be NEW
bears, of course. I know the collecting will go on at least through
Wednesday; you can contact the Wolf through their website for a collection
point near you. http://www.995thewolf.com/

I have also heard that they want plain old packaged white tube socks to
distribute to the firefighters and others in the rescue effort. They do NOT
want handknitted items because these will be so quickly trashed. There are
groups busy making 12" squares to be made into afghans for the homeless and
to children and others who have suffered loss; those wishing to knit or
crochet something may consider that. I have not yet heard whether the Dallas
Hand Knitters Guild will be collecting squares at its two Knit-Outs, but if
I hear more I will let y'all know.
