[Steppes] Warlord XXX - Thoughts on Change

I would like to comment on some of the things said in this forum on the idea
of a T-shirt contest for Warlord XXX. I have also expressed some "thoughts"
in the last paragraph. I hope all of you who care about our Barony of the
Steppes and would like to keep it alive and active will read this.

>And how long did the extra bags and T-Shirts remain in inventory for the
>Treasurer to keep track of? Making more work for any officer is an exercize
>I would prefer not to make.

That is a very good point, Borek, and it has been a problem in the past.

>On the note of Themes, How many Warlords in the past have had them? After
>they have been decided upon, how much time has the populace been given to
>actually act upon them and participate in Warlord using that theme? From
>what I have seen, the answer to both questions is about the same, very few
>and very little. Another reason Event Stewards should be chosen as soon as
>enough suitable bids have been given to and reviewed by Fritz, Catrin and
>Edwin

The most fun I EVER had at a Warlord was when it was themed. Many years
ago, the theme was the Crusades!! We had a Sarazin camp (I believe run by
Master Da’ud) and a Crusader camp (run by Count Sir Gunther). I remember
gatherings for the Crusader camp where we made Crusader badges (white
shields with red crosses) for everyone in the Crusader camp. It was so much
fun! A few years ago, I believe we had a Warlord on a Greek theme. That
was fun, too. This year, even though it wasn’t proclaimed as a theme, I
liked what the “Pirate” fun added to it. Why can’t Warlord XXX be run on a
theme? It is something for potential stewards to think about!

>An interesting thought, what did you have in mind as a logo for the event.
>Might be something that others could include in their thoughts for a
>T-Shirt design. Possibly use
>Quack Vadis as a Mascot....

Cute, I’ll mention it to the Household (House Voodoo Duck). Thanks for the
recognition Borek – the Voodoo Ducks have never even been mentioned in
Court. Last Warlord when there were threats of storms on Saturday night, we
went home, but left the Ducks with House Arkham at the site. When we got
home, we turned on the Weather Channel and miraculously saw the storms part
(like two tines of a fork) and go north and south of the event site. The
Power of Positivism is great, isn’t it?!

>My goal is to get people thinking and working towards this event now
>instead of crunching it into a couple of months just before
>the event. T-Shirts, Site Tokens, Scrolls, Decorations, and
>other items could be started now so that an even better product
>could be produced rather than risking a lesser version due
>to cramped time constraints.

This is an excellent goal, Borek. I totally agree.

I would like to bring up one more thing. If some of you hadn’t noticed, the
Barony is made up of so many of us older members that are stuck in our old
ways, it seems that things have stagnated a bit. Many have brought up the
thought that the Steppes isn’t as much fun as it used to be. Sometimes the
strongest opinions come from those who don’t come around much anymore
because they haven’t found the Barony “fun.” But it’s getting better. I
know that this is the long-term goal that Fritz and Catrin have had in mind
all along - to get back some of that "fun" we used to have. So here is what
I have to say:
What do we do to change things so that they will be fun again? Notice
the words “change” – I keep hearing the words “that’s not the way we have
always done it” or “that’s not how we do it here in the Steppes.” Well, I
say that this Barony is only going to survive and flourish by the injection
of new blood, new ideas and new people. I know some of you may not like the
idea, but I really think that a T-shirt design contest would show us our new
artists that have more recently joined the Steppes. Some of our new artists
may be having a hard time displaying on a medieval theme at something as
strict as an artisan competition, but a T-shirt contest is something they
can do, too. So I support Borek’s idea as I think it may open the door for
a new way to do things and cause some necessary changes. Just think about
it, ok?

(PS, Borek, I like the idea of having 12th Night T-shirts, too)
