[Steppes] Antler question

I've done a little work straightening horn. I first boiled a piece of
the horn in water for a couple of hours then put it between two steel
plates and flattened it then dried it, plates and all, in an oven for a
few hours at 250 degrees (I think).
Vinegar being a mind acid may help the horn soften faster??

Warning!!!! The boiling and baking stinks to high heaven.

I saw a special on the history channel where they boiled ivory in
vinegar
to soften it so they could reshape it but don't know if that technique
really works. Or how long it would take!!
