I would like to add a couple of things to keep in the car, especially in
view of our recent ice storm and the upcoming warmer weather. I grew
up up north and every winter there were people who died in their cars
because they went off the road in icy conditions. Here in Texas, we also
have to deal with extreme heat in the summer.

Seasonal Additions to your Car Kit

WINTER

Blankets (either regular blankets or the ones packaged in the camping
goods department of most stores)
Candles & a metal jar lid with some matches or a lighter. (This can add
enough heat to a car compartment to help alleviate hypothermia without
the hazard of running the engine (carbon monoxide) when there is the
possibility of having the exhaust blocked.) Melt some wax on the jar lid
to hold the candle.
Candy bars/energy bars Keeping a good body temperature is a must during
cold weather and these could save your life if you are stranded for an
extended period.
Water/Drinks Even in cold weather, dehydration can be an issue if
stranded for an extended period.
Flares These can help emergency personnel find you.
Mobile Phone If you have one, make sure you take it with you and that it
is charged up.

SUMMER

Candy bars/energy bars Keeping a good body temperature requires energy
and these could save your life if you are stranded for an extended
period.
Water/Drinks Especially in hot weather, dehydration can be an issue if
stranded for an extended period. Also, if you become overheated, dousing
yourself with water can temporarily help with heat issues.
Flares These can help emergency personnel find you.
Mobile Phone If you have one, make sure you take it with you and that it
is charged up.

Just my 2 cents worth.
