well, there is
1.sampling of foods brought by your friends at other tables.
2.setting up your table decorations
3. ogling other peoples decorations
4. placing discrete bets on who will win the costume contests. (was I not 
supposed to mention that?)
5. There is drinking in the bar
6. There is sampling various punches at your friends tables.
7. There is checking out the entries for the dessert competition.
8. There is watching the Bardic competition.
9. You can exchange token gifts with your friends.
10. There is shopping in the merchant are outside the hall.

Have I left out anything important? I'm sure that I have.
