Look at a color wheel and see the opposite contrasting color. I consult my
color wheel often if I'm at a loss as to what to look for. - HL Arabella

Subject: [Steppes] Garb question - materials

Greetings to those experts who have tackled silk brocades. (Chiara, I know
YOU have for sure.)

Ok, I have a rather dumb question, and I know there are several answers to
this question, but what do you think is the BEST answer?

I bought some of that beautiful brocade at Gulf Wars year before last (it's
purple cross fleuries within a diamond-pattern on black). Now that I have
recovered my sewing machine from under all of my teaching stacks, I am ready
to use it on a nice flowing Houppelande. I actually saw a dress of this
style made with the same trim.

Ok, so you know it's a silky brocade, but the color is hard to match - it's
a blue-violet and not a red-violet (which is easier to find). It was
suggested that if I can't match the purple, I should try a bright royal blue
for contrast. I'm going fabric hunting (again) and I'm not sure if a raw
silk would work (not too shimmery), a satin, a velveteen, a linen, a panne,
a dupiony silk (sp?)... or even a nice brushed blue-violet cotton. I plan
to use the brocade around the neck and at the hem.

Any thoughts on the matter? I'm hoping to finish it by Saturday (I'm home
all day the rest of this week).

Gab.
