Hurricane Katrina update

AUSTIN - The Texas Department of Transportation currently has more than 30 employees actively working to assist in recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina.
TxDOT is continuing to operate two of its travel information centers around the clock to assist evacuees coming into the state from New Orleans.
Department employees and local volunteers have been helping evacuees by providing water, snacks, shelter information and restroom facilities at the travel information center on Interstate 10 in Orange and at the travel information center on I-20 at Waskom.
In addition, with San Antonio opening another major shelter for as many as 25,000 evacuees, TxDOT has been using its electronic signs to post route information for travelers and buses containing refugees. Similar efforts already had been undertaken in the Houston area, where evacuees are being housed in the Astrodome.
Links to information on road closures in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama have been added to TxDOT's Web site at www.dot.state.tx.us for the convenience of Texas travelers.
