[Steppes] OT -- Houston Pet Refugee Needs

I cannot tell you who Debby Smith is, right off the bat. She is not on
my list of known rescuers; but I doubt it's complete as far away as
Houston.

The HUMANE SOCIETY is in charge of ALL animals being shipped in from LA
and MS. If you have space to foster an animal (at your own cost),
please contact your local Humane Society and tell them what you can
handle. We have a shipment of approximately 300, mostly dogs and cats,
coming in this week to the Dallas Area. So far, Flower Mound (where I'm
active) has had literally dozens of calls, making us in severe danger of
breaking down in tears. But all must be cared for because the people in
shelters really need to know that their fuzzy children are ok. It's all
a mental health thing, really (unless you're a rescue nut like me), and
every bit as important as serving the human evacuees because it is a
mental health issue for them.

If you are 'stuck' in this area this weekend, please consider helping
sort the 'in-kind' donations at the Dallas Shelter. They have heaps and
mounds of stuff that will go Absolutely Unused if it's not sorted into
usable categories.

If you have a few extra bucks, think about buying baby diapers for the
Dallas shelter. Or check Channel 4's website - they're keeping track of
the urgent needs, bless'em. Or donate to Red Cross (my personal
favorite, can you tell?) or Salvation Army (or Humane Society for that
matter) who will use the money to handle urgent needs. Beware of
'donation buckets' on street corners, in front of stores, etc. Some of
these are creeps, and the money is going into their own pockets.
