There is no direct conversion between thickness and guage. It has to be read 
from a chart and depends on the material you are using. Try

for a couple of the tables.

I found one definition as "The spelling for it is Gage. The gage of sheet 
metal defines its thickness. That definition taken further... has been 
defined as 41.82 lbs per square foot per inch thick."

Which would imply that if your 12 inch by 12 inch by 1 inch piece of metal 
did not weight 41.82 lbs, that some sort of conversion would need to be done 
to standardize the measurement. This would be a good reason for their being 
different thicknesses for different types of metal.

Anyone have anything better?
