Dear Friends,
The Virginia Biggers Center at HPUMC has been running a HUGE
Distribution Center for Hurricane Victims in their gym. It has been
open 7 days a week 9am-6pm for almost a month now. It is a monster
effort and they desperately need Volunteers to run it. I went to
deliver school uniforms and school supplies collected by girl and
boy scouts and witnessed the inside and it is quite remarkable what
they are doing for these people. It is like a grocery store and it
is all free for those who have ID and a FEMA number.
I drove by on my way somewhere else on Monday and saw a sign that
says "Closed until Thursday." I wondered why...so as I was helping
a family try to find some things to furnish their home I called to
see what times they would re-open and I asked why they had closed.
She said they were all so very weary they had to have a break. The
sound in her voice broke my heart. They really need help!
So I promised to send out the word that they need more help from
everyone in the neighborhood. I am hoping each of you might help
and also, in turn, will send out the word to anyone able to
volunteer a few hours a week to help them. There are still so many
families that need to be placed and will need items to make a new
home. And they can get what they need here. I will attach info
about this Center in case you may have some items that they are in
need of at this time. But what they need more than anything else
is YOU. Please call the Connect and Serve Office, 214.523.2246 to
volunteer.
Distribution Center For Donated Relief Goods
The Biggers Building of Highland Park United Methodist Church has
been designated as a distribution center for donated relief goods
and
supplies by the Red Cross. It is located at 5817 Hillcrest (just
north of Mockingbird). They are serving a large number of people
and are short on supplies (needs are listed below.)
Volunteers are needed to sort and deliver donated items. Please call
the Connect and Serve Office, 214.523.2246 to volunteer.
Hurricane Response Needs - updated 9-7-05, p.m.
URGENT NEEDS:
• Volunteers, and $25 gift cards: Walmart, Target, groceries, and
gas • Pillows
• Sheets
• Diapers, all sizes
• Baby Formula
• Baby food
• Duffel bags
• DISD school uniforms
• School supplies
• Baby strollers
• Bed frames, mattresses tables and chairs sofas, bookcases
Please honor the humanity of our new neighbors; all donated goods
should be clean and in good condition; Baby food and formula should
be in unopened packaging.
Please bring relief items to HPUMC's Biggers Building at 5817
Hillcrest, across from the church, between 9:00 am- 4:00 pm.
