Does these help?
http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~rcchurch/selwyn.htm
In summary, it's supposed to be Anglo-Saxon, but the person used as an example in this geneology page, is from the Victorian era.

Supposed to be the etymology of the name, don't know the support, but a good place to start by proving / disproving what they say.

An example of Selwyn as a last name in period in England (Richard III / Henry VII). Bodes well for it being used as a first name earlier in period.

Official UK place history, documenting Selwyn as a place name, and its connections to people in period.
Doing a quick search through things SCA, Selwyn (aka Selwin) is used in registered SCA names as a first and a last name. These superficial sources indicate that Selwyn followed a typical pattern of a first name in early period that translated into a frozen patronymic that became a last name. Hopefully, this is enough background to faciliate serious research -- pointers, if you will.
