I personally like the idea of continuing to have a newcomer sewing day.  In
my old Barony, we would take a weekend (just because travel in Japan by
train took a long time some days).  The first day or morning, we would go to
the fabric shops and find material for the tunics (or we would ask people to
bring their own fabric and indicate how much they would need before the
workshop), and then then next day, or that afternoon, or whatever, we would
get together and help them make tunics, hoods and sometimes pants.  I know
that they were all proud at the next event, saying "Look at this!  I made it
all by myself!"

Another thought, just coming from my personal experience.  I did have my
first piece of garb given to me, but I had to "work" for it.  There was a
piece of nice loaner garb that my friend basically made for me (I couldn't
wear the loaner garb that was available, as their was a significant size
difference).  A couple months later, I made a hat and belt to complete the
ensemble.  My friend said that since I made the accessories, the outfit was
complete, and it was now mine.  It felt good to have a hand in completing
the look.  :)

The starter feast gear kit sounds like a neat idea, too, if it doesn't get
too expensive.
