Too much for the Baroness, the Artisans, and the competitors -- and
far fewer people who would have the time to look at the entries.

Warlord is already a marathon for a number of us. We don't need to
burden it further.

Steppes Artisan is a major A&S venue, and has been a calendar event
for all but the first few. It is the only annual true "body of work"
competition remaining that I know of in the kingdom, the rest having
gone the way of severe item-limiting. It is therefore a very
valuable venue for Laurels to get a true perspective of a artist's
scope. It is also the most appropriate time to recognize artistic
achievement through the medium of kingdom awards. Taking it
off-calendar would make Twelfth Night and Warlord courts longer --
just what no one wants.

It's worth pointing out that we did TRY this year to have Artisan not
scheduled against Pennsic, but Pennsic moved its date up after we'd
reserved the spot on the Ansteorran kingdom calendar for this year.
In the years past when it hasn't conflicted with Pennsic, it's been
quite large -- larger than Laurels' Prize. The Crown came, we had
Laurel circles, and we also used to have a feast in the evening. I
understand the problems we've been having with finding affordable
sites, but it's been sad to see the diminution of the event to a
hectic, stressful afternoon, with no chance to relax & talk with
artists in the evening.

It seems to me that the most reasonable solution is to make Twelfth
Night a regional event, which it has been in effect for some years
now. That way we don't have to pay the Kingdom Event Tax anymore
(which we have been having to pay for Eisteddfod, despite the
negligible effect it has on attendance/profits), and the profits get
distributed around to all the many groups that contribute to the
event already.
