[Steppes] Feast vs. Catering

You know, I consider 12th Night to be a feast. Unless you get
Wolfgang Puck in with strict instructions, I can't see a catered
event of having food worthy of such a moniker.

Yes, some SCA feasts do well and truly suck. That's kind of our
lot in life. But a properly done feast makes the event. And, if we
don't have feasts at events anymore then where do the cooks
get to display their skills? A&S competitions? That's a rather limited
market.

Yes, sites are getting harder to find and there are insurance problems.
But a good Head Cook can overcome this. I've done the Ansteorran
Chili Party for 500 in the middle of the Serengetti. I've cooked pretty
decent feasts for over 100 in a pasture (anyone remember the
terrific Black Oak Keep Championship meals?). It's nice to have a huge
modern kitchen but it can be worked around.

Personally, I like to have as much as possible at an event run by SCA folk.
Having servers for some catering company just detracts from what we
are trying to do.

And, as has been stated, any kind of decent catering will cost around $10
a person, minimum.

Events like Steppes Artisan and Warlord don't need a feast, although it
is nice. Having 12th Night with no feast or catered is an insult.
