The AKS Gem Show will be at the Grapevine Convention Center (1209 S Main,
76057) Feb 26-28 - a nice show with some vendors not often seen in the area.
For those that are interested, I will be teaching the following classes.
Please cross-post to any other lists that might have an interest - thanks
Basic pearl knotting - Fri 2 pm
Pearls are traditionally knotted to protect the pearls and prevent loss if
the thread breaks. But knotting can be used with many stones, ecpecially
soft stones like amber and turquoise, and can become part of the design of
the jewelry. Come learn a simple method of knotting, and some of the tricks
and traps of this technique.
Please bring any of the following if you have them: beading tweezers (long
sharp points, no teeth in the jaws), beads to practice on (round 6 - 10mm
beads are the easiest to learn with - your grandmother's pearls should NOT
be your first project), beading cord (silk or nylon) and needles, scissors,
clasp, beadtips, glue, work surface (tray, box or towel works). If you don't
have these items, they will be available at the show or from the instructor.
1 ½ hours, $20 per person.
Findings - Sun 1 pm
Ever need just the right clasp or other finding and it's not available? Come
learn how to make your own clasps (hook-and-eye, S hook, toggle), head and
eye pins, ear wires, and chain links from wire. We will be working with
copper wire - if you want to make sterling findings, you will need to bring
your own wire. Instructor will provide copper wire for a supply fee of $5.
Please bring any of the following you might have: pliers - round nose, chain
nose, flat nose; wire cutters, files, hammer and bench block; beads you
might want to use as accents; wire in gauges 16, 18, 20, maybe 22 or 24
(especially for pearls and small stones).
2 hours, $30, supply fee of $5 if you need wire.
Jewelry from the Hardware Store - Sat 1 pm
Hardware stores are fun to wander through, and they have a number of
components that work well for jewelry, especially if you enjoy working with
copper. There are always the tools - pliers, hammers, files, etc. Then there
is wire - copper, brass, black (soft) iron, aluminum in various sizes. And
don't forget nuts and washers for bolts, many of which come in copper or
brass. And wander through the plumbing section - lots of copper tubing and
various sizes and shapes of fittings to attach to the tubing. Of course, we
will be doing other things with the pieces, but that's the fun part.
Check out a hardware store before you come and bring your finds along. An
Ace or Tru-Value hardware store is likely to have more unusual pieces than
Lowes or Home Depot. Instructor will also bring some interesting pieces. You
might want to bring a few beads to use, and some silver or colored craft
wire if you have it. And please bring any tools you might have, such as
pliers, hammers, files, wire cutters.
2 hours, $30, plus small fee for parts (20 cents to $3 each, depending on
the part)
