[Steppes] OT - Tech question

This is going to sound like a very strange question but my hope is someone
on our list might be able to help me.

I have a wireless kb/mouse combo that has a fob.  The batteries (AAA) seem
to dying. Replaced with lithium and it refused to reset or work. Put the old
ones back in and it worked.

Went and bought alkaine and they didn't work.  Put the old ones back in...
it worked.

Any thoughts???  Before I throw it out the first window I find??
