from TDW Geeks website:

Newly unearthed archeological evidence is sure to make a lot of feminists very happy.

It is well documented by modern historians that Vikings invaded Eastern England around 900 AD, and established their own medieval kingdom, "the Danelaw." What has recently come to light about this venture challenges the idea of "traditional gender roles," in that scientists have found evidence that Viking women accompanied the men during the acquisition and formation of the kingdom.

Archeologists have found such evidence in looking at burial sites around the area, unearthing indications such as jewelry and Norse dressings typically belonging to women, as well as osteological confirmation that at least a few women were present through early invasions of England. It gets better: their funerals were equal in splendor and honor.

A new study from the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Western Australia in the Early Medieval Europe journal takes a long look at burial sites in the region.

>From the study:

"These results, six female Norse migrants and seven male, should caution against assuming that the great majority of Norse migrants were male, despite the other forms of evidence suggesting the contrary. This result of almost a fifty-fifty ratio of Norse female migrants to Norse males is particularly significant when some of the problems with osteological sexing of skeletons are taken into account."
