[Steppes] A Question From the Rialto

I was reading my newsgroups this morning and someone posted to the Rialto
(rec.org.sca) about the origin of red belts for squires. The person was
looking for any information as to when the practice of red belts came into
the society, why red specifically was chosen, and any more info on this
anyone had.
Anyone got any good info on this so I can help him out in his search?
