An Irishman took a young visitor from America hunting for geese on the marsh. But the fog was so thick that morning they couldn't see the end of the gun. It was very frustrating because they could hear the geese honking and rising and flying about over their heads. The mist, however, hid the birds from view. The Irishman thought it would be a shame for the young man to return without even having fired a shot in Ireland. So he told him the next time they heard the geese rise and honk to fire a blind shot into the fog. The young man did as he was told and a fox fell out of the sky. At a loss to explain this odd happening, the quick witted Irishman told to his friend that the fog was so thick the fox was walking on it to reach the geese. Just for fun, Bre'nain MacGilla Pa'traic He hammered and sang with tiny voice, And sipped his mountain dew; Oh! I laughed to think he was caught at last, But the fairy was laughing, too.
