After I reread my article I realize that there has been a change since I wrote it. 25 years ago most of us carried a single view of the SCA. Since then that has changed. I do not believe one view is better than another, but I do believe we need to make room for everyone. The old view in Ansteorra was were studying history. We were creating pre 17th century events and we were using roleplaying- some of us a lot other a little- to help us experience what it was like to be in the medieval culture and we were having fun doing it. I follow this vision. I use my persona to teach people about honor, chivalry and courtly love. Another vision is to follow the Dream. This may or may not involve the study of history depending on an individual's view of The Dream. I really do not have a handle on this because it changes so much from one person to another. Another vision is living the SCA. As far as I can tell this view sees the SCA as a way of life. Many of the followers believe that the study of history is no longer necessary. Others are keen on the banners and pavilions and the physical display. Most do not believe in personas or roleplaying. Of course others are really keen on authenticy. This view again varies greatly among individuals. Some people see the SCA as a place to learn things and display their arts. They believe in historical study, but often believe that it must be accompanied with documentation. Whether it is fighting or Black work embroidery they are one shot johnnies. They do what they do and are not interested in anything else. The last group see the SCA as a pathway to a better life. They see the values of the SCA as a special way of thinking. Most of us are a little of one thought group or a little of another. I left out a important group who see the SCA as an area to party. I have often fallen into that group just wanting my parties to be somewhat period. When we choose our Baron/ess we need to look at their vision because whatever it is will be the primary vision of the group. Now I have made good negotiations with people of different visions than mine. Usually I make my request clear to them before the poling and I have discovered that most candidate live up to their promises. It is important to talk to each candidate and explain to them what you would like to see nurtured in your group.
