I am  afraid I disagree. While I do think we have to much "business" 
going on I am afraid everything I go to in the Steppes is sit around 
and talk about our life and home. I do not find this "fun". I have 
mundane situations were I can do this and not have to wear the funky 
clothes. I don't want to go to a "swim" party. I want to go to a fete 
or a revel. I want to feel the magic. I don't want to talk about the 
organization the SCA and I don't want to talk about my work. I want to 
escape into that special place of the Steppes in the Kingdom of 
Ansteorra. I am afraid that many of us in the organization of the SCA 
are sort of boring. Our personas aren't boring but many of us 
(including myself) can't carry on a normal conversation for 10 minutes 
without driving people crazy. 

We used to have little period events. The only place I can find it now 
is at Tarkus' Bardic in Elfsea. We have a wonderful time there. The 
house is fantastic. It is lighted with candles and we perform and talk 
about the kingdom and I can escape the 21st century. 

People can join groups that socialize and were they can talk about 
their lives for little or no money. They can find groups that will 
fill their social needs that take almost no effort. The only place 
where they can escape for the modern world is the SCA. If we want more 
people we need to give them that kind of fun.
