As to elimination combats there are alot down through history. Jousting is an elimination tourney,so is individual combat,duels by rapier or revolver are elimination tourneys. Champions fighting for their Lords is elimination, and you didn't have to kill each time so long as the opponent ceeded your victory or dominance. Playing chess is also in the elimination tourneys.
