An elimination combat is much different than a tournament.

Tourney yes but I know of no instance in which a Joust is elimination,
except perhaps a pas similar to what we call a bear pit in which you
only got one challenge. Sometimes they were by accident or by the
breaking of rules. But the same is true with all sports.

Neither of these are tournaments. Both are judicial combat. But
individual combat isn't really elimination, in the sense we are
discussing, because there is nothing afterwards. But if you know
of an instance of judicial combat in which multiple people(3+) fight
multiple, one on one fights to determine a champion of the group.
That would be decent documentation for single elimination I suppose,
but its still not a tournament.

But were there actually chess tournaments in period? Another thing I
would love to see a reference on because games are a particular
interest of mine.

The concept of eliminating an opponent exists in period. War in itself
is elimination but it isn't a tournament. To my knowledge the concept
of elimination from a tournament by legal means wasn't done. But I
would love for someone to prove me wrong.
