New W32.Sasser worm requires IMMEDIATE updates

Description:

W32.Sasser, a worm that attempts to exploit the
Microsoft Windows XP, 2000, and Server 2003 MS04-
011 vulnerability, spreads by scanning randomly-
chosen IP addresses for vulnerable systems. You
must immediately update both Windows and Norton
Antivirus to protect your computer from this
worm.

If left unpatched, the vulnerability
allows remote code execution and enables an
attacker to gain full control of affected
systems. To maintain the integrity of the campus
network, infected computers will have network
access disabled.

TO PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER:

1. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

2. Scan for updates

3. Apply ALL Critical Security Updates and
Service Packs

4. Continue to repeat steps 1-3 until all
critical updates and service packs have been
installed. You may be required to reboot your
computer.

5. Download and install Norton Antivirus
Corporate Edition on all computers by going to
www.eraider.ttu.edu (login, click Manage your
eRaider Account, and then click the Software
Download button). Norton Antivirus Corporate
Edition is available to the entire university via
the campus agreement with Symantec.

6. Keep Norton Anti-virus updated by clicking
on "Live Update" button.

7. Perform full system scans with Norton
Antivirus at least once a week.

8. Set Windows to automatically install Windows
Critical updates. Instructions can be found at
the website listed in the additional information
below.

For more detailed information on this virus,
please visit our website at the link below. If
you have any questions or need assistance, please
feel free to contact IT Help Central at 742-HELP
(4357).
