Given examples of "Sussex", "Wessex", "Essex", "Norfolk", and 
"Suffolk",
which I suspect (without hard evidence) are contractions of older
fuller forms, I would think "South Ansteorra" would be a plausible
medieval name.

But, again, I think the discussion premature.
