I'm sorry, Danel.  I should have included white in there.  I didn't specifically because I was talking about colors that are not reserved as white is.  
However, that is one thing that I told all my newcomers when I was a hospitaler.  I told them the things they couldn't wear and the things they shouldn't wear.  I did make the distinction.  As already stated, yellow, red and green are not reserved belt colors.  However, if you warn the newbies, they will at least be prepared when someone asks them the inevitable question.  And of course they can totally avoid the nastiness about white belts if they are warned.
