POSITION OPENING - LAUREL SOVEREIGN OF ARMS
The Laurel Sovereign of Arms (Laurel) is the principal heraldic officer of the Society and the head of the College of Arms. Laurel is responsible for fostering the study and practice of heraldry, processing submissions, and overseeing the heraldic activities of the Known World. The office entails the coordination and management of a large group of volunteers scattered across the world. A detailed job description is found in section IX of the Administrative Handbook of the College of Arms at http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/admin.html#IX.
The current structure of the Laurel office splits the submissions work between two main deputies: Pelican Sovereign of Arms (decisions on name submissions) and Wreath Sovereign of Arms (decisions on armory submissions). Other structures for the office are acceptable. The Board will accept applications from an individual or a team to perform the duties of these offices. The current Wreath and Pelican may be willing to continue in the positions, but each applicant should discuss that possibility with them.
Laurel and staff are unpaid positions. Laurel and staff duties currently require approximately 20 hours a week (primarily submissions processing), plus about 5-10 hours a week for Laurel management tasks. Also required is office space sufficient for 18 filing cabinets, five boxes of "currently in process" submissions, 10 boxes of binders with "archive" copies of armory, and two bookshelves of assorted books, etc.), plus the computers, computer programs and documentation, backup tapes and disks, printer, photocopier, and flatbed color scanner. Although the files, books and equipment must be easily available, they do not need to be in the same location.
The position requires the ability to manage a distributed staff for what is equivalent to a small business. The ideal applicant will have the ability to meet tight deadlines and produce a Laurel letter of Acceptance and Return monthly, basic financial skills including the ability to define and operate within a budget, and the ability to interact with people at all levels of the Society. Additional desired skills include: armory and onomastic knowledge, computer literacy, and word processing skills. A local staff to assist in the weekly filing, and time and ability to travel, have proven useful as well. Email access is required.
Resumes must be made in writing to Laurel Resume, SCA Inc., Box 360789, Milpitas CA 95036, or to resumes at sca.org. Resumes must be received by March 31, 2005.
