*Additional Class Notes

Court Heraldry
HL Etienne de St. Amaranth (Star Principal Herald)
--This is a 3 hour class in serving as a herald in a noble or landed court.
It will be followed by a break for lunch and one hour for a court practicum
in the general assembly (room 7).

Blazon 102: The Grammar of Blazon
Master Da'ud ibn Auda (al-Jamal Herald)
--This class on blazon is not necessarily for people brand new to heraldry,
but doesn't require extensive knowledge of heraldry. (Basically, if they
know the difference between "rampant" and "gules".)

Beat it into Submission
(mastering the heraldic submissions process and paperwork)
HL Medb Liath
--A more advanced look at the submissions process and how to prepare your or
your submitter's items so they get through the system without problems. It
starts where the Warranting class leaves off and extends the concepts further.

Teaching Heraldry to Children
HL Hans Faust dem herlat
--Ideas and activities for heralds and MoCs on how to teach heraldry to
children.

"It was funny until we found it in real heraldry."
Master Da'ud ibn Auda (al-Jamal Herald)
--Master Da'ud has found some new, period arms to add to this delightful and
unusual look at period arms and armory.

Irish Gaelic Names
Written by Dame Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (Rowel Herald)
Presented by HL Magnus von Lubeck (Orle Herald)
--Mari's class presents how Gaelic personal names were formed in period
Ireland and some history of the naming systems. Forget everything you know
about modern Irish names because they did it differently in period.

German Personal and Period House Names
HL Magnus von Lubeck (Orle Herald)
--Examines the formation of personal names in Germany, a brief history of
German naming patterns, and types of house names in Germany that serve as
examples for SCA households.

Naming Practices and Cultures in the SCA
Written by Dame Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (Rowel Herald)
Presented by HL Magnus von Lubeck (Orle Herald)
--This presents the basic patterns of how people were named in period and
how these type patterns extend over many cultures that are included in the
Society.

Byzantine Naming Practices
Mistress Xene Theriane
--History and construction of names in the Eastern Roman Empire from
throughout its 1000 year history.

Period Mongolian Naming Practices
Mistress Clare RosMuire Saint John
--A basic overview of how to develop names for a Mongolian persona with a
brief history of names within period.

Precedence and Protocol in Ansteorra: History and Structure
Mistress Serena Lascelles (Blanc Gryffon Herald)
--Why the heck is the symbol of the Iris a rainbow? Why does Ansteorra have
so many awards? What are they all for?" This class is for you! There's a
system to it all, the underlying design and balance of which go back to the
earliest days of the kingdom. New folks will learn to tell the difference
among all the Sable widgets, and longer-term members will enjoy the stories
of the evolution of awards from their original intent to what they are
today. (If time allows, I will also discuss ceremonial positions such as
Queen's Champion.) Visual aids will include as many examples of actual
pieces of insignia as we can assemble! Instructor has almost twenty years'
experience as a precedence herald in Ansteorra. A handout will be provided,
in which I hope to have pictures, at no cost to students (however, donations
gratefully accepted).

Commentary 101 - Introduction to Kingdom Commentary
Lord Jayme Dominguez del Valle (Retiarius)
--Fundamentals of how to get started in commenting on submissions at the
internal kingdom level and how the process works.
