Just to be clear...

For a local fighter practice to be "official", the following must be present:

1. A Warranted Marshal or their designated deputy (an authorized marshal who is an appointed deputy)

AND

2. A local officer or their designated deputy

These can be the same individual as would be the case with a Local Knight Marshal or Local Rapier Marshal.

Note: If you are holding an armored fighter practice, a warranted armored combat marshal must be present; if you are holding a rapier practice, a warranted rapier marshal must be present; etc.

>From the Participant's Handbook:

X. MARSHALING IN SPECIFIC SITUATIONS
B. Marshaling at Practice:
1. Each SCA sanctioned combat activity at an official SCA practice shall be attended by at least one Warranted Marshal or their designated Deputy.
2. If the practice is in a public place, such as a park, both the Combatants and the Marshal should be especially careful to ensure that the Combatants do not injure non-participants.
3. The local Marshal is to be considered the Marshal-in-Charge at local practices.

Note that the "designated Deputy" as referred to above must be an Authorized Marshal who has been appointed by the Local Marshal as their deputy.

Who are Warranted Marshals? From the Participant's Handbook:

Local Knight Marshal: The chief Warranted Marshal of a local group

Local Rapier Marshal: The Warranted Rapier Marshal of a local group

Regional Marshal: Any Warranted Combat Marshal designated the administrative Deputy of a recognized region within the Kingdom. Appointed by the Earl Marshal or any of the various designated Deputy Earl Marshals of the Kingdom.

Authorization (Authorizing) Marshal: A Warranted official of the SCA Inc. who has the knowledge and ability to authorize individuals to participate in SCA combat-related activities within the Kingdom of Ansteorra and has the responsibilities and duties of Field and Inspecting Marshals.

Remember: As an official deputy to the Local Knight Marshal, the Local Rapier Marshal is also considered to be Warranted and must be an Authorized Marshal. They might not appear on the Kingdom Earl Marshal or Kingdom Rapier Marshal's roster warrant, but local deputies that are warrantable are considered to be covered under the Warranted Local Marshal's warrant.

The Local Knight or Rapier Marshal must be warranted by the Kingdom Earl Marshal or Rapier Marshal and appear on their respective Kingdom Warrant roster. As Local Knight or Rapier Marshal they are also considered to be a local officer of the SCA Branch. It is important to remember that a Local Knight Marshal or Local Rapier Marshal must be an authorized marshal to be warrantable.

There is some confusion regarding what an Authorized Marshal is. Authorized Marshal: An individual who is monitoring the safety and conduct of SCA combat related activities on the field. Individuals doing the marshaling at Society events may or may not be Warranted Marshals, but they must, at minimum, have authorization to participate as a Field Marshal in the appropriate SCA combat style, and the Marshal-In-Charge must deem them competent.

Being an Authorized Marshal does not necessarily mean that you are a Warranted Marshal or that you are an Authorizing Marshal. You must be designated as an official deputy to the local Knight or Rapier Marshal AND be an authorized marshal in that form of combat.
