CANDLEMAS CLASSES  & DEMOS 2005

CLASS SECTION #1
10AM-11AM-
Elisabetta Morosini (synnyday78723 at yahoo.com- Costume Analysis and Art
You see the perfect dress, doublet, hat, or whosiwhatsit and want to  
make it. So you go to the fabric store and are at a loss as to what to  
buy.  How do you know what it is made of.  How can you tell how it is  
made in the first place?   This class will help you find the clues to  
the garment's construction. Class limit: The first 15 will receive a  
handout.

Master Anton of Winteroak (John cross)(john.cross at gmail.com)- The  
Motion Of Mars
Fifteen century astronomy taught in persona. How the planets move  
around the sky with a special focus on Mars. The terms used by  
astronomers of the period are introduced and any period misconception  
are presented as fact. (30 minutes)

Lady Catalina Ana de Salamanca (Katrina O'Keefe)  
(catalina at ravenkeep.org)- How To Do A Demo
A class on organizing presentations to the public on what is the SCA.  
(30 minutes)

Honorable Lady Medb Liath (Rhonda Hays) (housedragonstar at earthlink.net)  
-Great Chain of Being
The class covers the orgins of the idea, an introduction to Lovejoy's  
book, some of the ways it also shaped medieval society, how it  
manifested in medieval society, and how it can be seen working in the  
SCA today.  Lastly, it also touches on how to introduce the concept to  
newcomers, who often struggle with why we do some of what we do. I will  
have some handouts (no cost) and paper for taking notes. First 30-40  
minutes will be lecture, the last discussion.

Lady Celestria leDragon (celestria_ledragon at yahoo.com)-Enameling Glass  
(15 minutes)
No class limits or cost. Handout available for those who would like  
one. Will show how to do glass enameling that can be used as gifts,  
largess and etc.

Baroness Oriana della Francesca - Intro to Illumination
An introduction to period pigments, colors, the usage of goatskin  
parchment, and a demonstration of gold leafing and painting. No class  
limit or cost. (DEMO)

1:30PM-2PM
Stephanie Winter von Brandenburg (azaleaviola at hotmail.com) (With  
Isabella)-How To Make Trunk Cooler Coolers: Leather-like Trunk
This 30 minute class demonstrates how to use papier mache techniques  
to recreate an ice chest to a leather looking trunk. Papier mache is  
a technique that has been use for centuries. It may be used to create  
or conceal many items in your household. See how easy to transform your  
ice chest under a sheet to a stately piece of ambiance.

Isabella (Cynthia Derrick) (Ball00nz at aol.com)-Accessorizing The Italian  
Lady Or Dressing And Accessories Of An Italian Lady
In the Italian renaissance it was about status about having a lot of  
wealth and showing every one you had more. Accessories played a part in  
showing your asset. Courtesans used them as props to draw attention to  
ones self. Embellishing with jewelry and embroidery were ways of  
enhancing a gown. The style of hair and headdress worn also told people  
who you were. Then as now a Lady is not dressed until she is wearing  
her accessories.(30 minutes)

2:30PM-3PM
Lady Tabitha Baker- Period Steam Table (30 minutes)
This class will show a way I have found to display food entries in A&S  
competitions in a more period friendly manner. It also works well for  
sideboard feasts or taverns to keep the foods at the appropriate  
temperature for long periods of time without use of electricity and  
without risking food spoilage.No limit on attendance. Will have  
handout.

3PM-4PM
Baron Christian Doré- How To Be French
A few well placed words and phrases can create the illusion of a French  
person living in an English speaking land. This class gives you  
examples as well as techniques and methods for creating your own set of  
simple phrases. And you don't have to know how to speak French to do  
it!

10AM-11AM-Honorable Lady Aerin MacConache -The Art of Engraving on Glass
A brief overview of diamond point engraving in England during Queen  
Elizabeth I reign.  Methods and applications, together with safety  
aspects of engraving on glass, will be followed by hands on engraving.  
Hand engraving tools will be available for use during the class.  Class  
handout will be available for participants and observers who are  
interested in this lovely and useful art.  Maximum of 10 students,  
observers are welcome.  1 hour

11AM-NOON
Lady Mot (mot at swbell.net)- A "Speed Date" With The Arts And Science
Considering an arts and sciences project but feeling bogged down by the  
idea of documentation? Not sure how to go about doing the research and  
wondering what the judges are looking for? Participants in this fun,  
hands-on class will research, create, document, and judge a mock A&S  
project to gain a better understanding of what's involved in preparing  
a static entry for competition. Designed for the A&S beginner or  
novice. (1 hour) No cost for handouts. (Materials will be provided for  
up to 10 participants. Others are welcome to observe).

Noon -12:30PM
Lady Vyvyanne Fox (Athena Peters) Basics of Pattern Drafting (30  
minutes)
Description: An introduction to the basics of pattern drafting that  
will work for both men and women and all body types. Learn to develop a  
personal body block pattern that can then be adjusted for any fitted  
garment mostly useful for mid to late period clothing.
There is no cost for handouts.

12:30PM-1PM
Honorable Lady Aerin MacConacher -Engraving a Set of Marriage Goblets
A demonstration of diamond point glass engraving from bare glass to  
embellished goblet in steps.  A set of four goblets will be displayed  
in different states of the engraving process. The steps of engraving  
will be shown in progression. (30 minutes) (DEMO)

Don Maelgwyn Dda (Kevin Marsh) (kmarsh at cox-internet.com)-Materials  
Choices For SCA Armour Construction
Covers various types of steel, aluminum, leather, and plastic with the  
advantages and disadvanges of each. Types of padding will also be  
covered.  (1 hour)

2PM-2:15PM
Don Maelgwyn Dda (Kevin Marsh) (kmarsh at cox-internet.com)-Leather  
Hardening With Rabbit Glue(15 minutes) need electric power for a small  
toaster oven. This demonstration will show the basic techniques for  
hardening leather using the historically documented methods of wet  
forming followed by low-temperature baking and the application of  
rabbit glue.  The demo will be limited to practical issues but a  
discussion of various leather hardening techniques and how they compare  
will be included in the class "Materials Choices for SCA Armour  
Construction". No demo fee (DEMO)

2:15PM-3PM
Lady Bridget Rede Of Dunvegan (jenj at mail.utexas.edu- Research and paper  
writing techniques
Documentation and Research (30-45 minutes)- Interested in researching a  
topic but not sure where to start? Worried about what to include when  
you need "documentation" for an A&S entry? We'll talk about the  
research process (it's like a treasure hunt!) and what to do with all  
that information you've uncovered, and we'll also go over what judges  
look for in a well-documented A&S entry.

3PM-3:15PM
Lady Bridget Rede Of Dunvegan (jenj at mail.utexas.edu) - An introduction  
to 16th century horses and riding
Horses and horsemanship in the 16th century (10-15 minutes) - How did  
we get from the jousting tournaments of the 14th century to the  
carrousels and ballets du cheval of the late 16th century? What is a  
ballet du cheval anyway? What are those weird patterns they're doing on  
horseback? This short demo will give you an idea of what you're looking  
at next time you see an equestrian performance, like those done at BG  
25th, done by our own Bryn Gwlad equestrians. (DEMO)

Mistress Aethelyan Moondragon (ezakes at planview.com) - Social Graces in  
Period and in the SCA
Not sure what to do when called up into Court? Not sure how to address  
the local Baron? How about finding out what the wife of the Courtier  
did while her husband was dancing attendance on the Queen? We will  
discuss many aspects of behavior in period, as well as how "good  
manners" works in the SCA.
