Tournaments Illuminated Editor and Art Director

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is seeking candidates for the positions of Tournaments Illuminated Editor and Art Director. The current officer steps down in April, 2011 and in order to ensure a smooth transition, applications for the positions are being accepted now for training to begin in January, 2011.

Tournaments Illuminated (TI) is the Society’s quarterly magazine, furthering research, education and ‘living history’ recreation in the of pre-seventeenth century Western culture, with additional features unique to the SCA: humor, kingdom news, medieval travel destinations, corporate announcements, museums of interest, and more.

Duties and responsibilities of the editor include:

·         producing the quarterly magazine on schedule;
· answering queries in a courteous and professional manner
·         developing manuscripts with authors based on TI’s audience, general readability and (where appropriate) historical accuracy, with the assistance of the TI Review Panel;
·         working with the TI Review Panel coordinator;
·         overseeing column contributors;
·         disseminating information to the TI kingdom liaisons, either directly or through a deputy;
·         supplying text for updates to the Society website;
·         and quarterly reporting.
Duties and responsibilities of the art director include:
·         layout of the magazine while adhering to graphic standards on schedule;
·         maintaining contact with illustration and photography contributors;
· and reporting to the Editor.

Editor

The position requires approximately 10+ hours per week, except during the two weeks before publication, when more time is spent putting an issue together. Qualifications for the position include excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to work independently to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, strong computer skills, ability to organize a staff, and familiarity with SCA publications. Professional experience in a modern editing environment and prior experience in an SCA chronicler position are desirable, but not required.

Art Director

The position requires a modest weekly time commitment, except prior to publication deadline when 30+ hours per week may be required. Qualifications for the position include expertise with magazine production, the ability to meet deadlines, and experience working with printers. Our current printing vendor uses Macintosh, and our existing files all are Macintosh InDesign. If working with a PC, applicants must have access to and experience with a computer running InDesign or Quark, and the ability to export files to press-quality pdf format. Professional experience in a print graphics environment and prior experience in an SCA chronicler position are desirable, but not required.

Both Positions

Reliable e-mail access is absolutely vital to both positions and while high-speed internet access is not required, it has proven to be very useful. Reasonable expenses are covered by the Corporation and may include: paper, printer cartridges, stamps, mailing expenses, and a post office box. To receive reimbursement, you will be asked to submit an expense report, with receipts attached. The Editor and Art Director both receive a small stipend from the SCA after each issue goes to press. Past experience has shown that the Editor and the Art Director work more easily together when they are in the same general locale. This arrangement is preferable, though not required, and candidate teams are encouraged to apply together. Individual applications also will be considered. One person may apply for and be appointed to both jobs if the candidate has all of the necessary skills.

The Tournaments Illuminated Editor and Art Director are appointed by the Board but report directly to the Publications Manager. The team is warranted for a three-year term of service to complete 12 scheduled quarterly publications.

Hard copies of résumés (both professional and SCA related, including offices held and honors) must be sent to the attention of ‘The Board of Directors’, SCA, Inc., P.O. Box 360789, Milpitas, CA 95036-0789.

Electronic courtesy copies with three references each for SCA and modern, including names and e-mail addresses also should be sent to resumes at sca.org and pubmanager at sca.org.

Résumés must be received by December 1, 2010, and the successful applicant will be notified in January 2011.
