A herald, a scribe, and a fighter walk into a symposium.

No it is not a joke, but a coming event. On July 31, the Barony of Wiesenfeuer will host the FREE 2010 Ansteorran Heraldic and Scribal Symposium in Oklahoma City. (Because the event is FREE, no NMS fee is collected. Bring a newcomer and a friend and introduce the SCA.) At this writing there are 42 hours of class, practicum, and even structured game. (Plus time for fighter practice.)

Please be aware that the event is not just for heralds and scribes. Fighter practice, for both chivalric and rapier, will be held through the day (as long as fighters want to fight). There are classes on the schedule which are as relevant to non-heralds as to new heralds. Classes on period naming practice, tracking your submissions, introduction to designing arms, list heraldry, beginning charter painting, charter design, beginning calligraphy, etc. Even classes on how to recognize which coronet goes with which rank and how to address the person wearing it.

And there are more advanced classes for heralds and scribes. Advanced scribal techniques, court ceremony design, etc.

If you wanted to attend but your spouse or significant other was not very interested, tell them to pack their armor bag and they are coming with you! Would you like to travel up but your spouse or significant other is not really interested in heraldic or scribal or fighting? Oklahoma City offers, for example, the Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Frontier City amusement park, and White Water Bay for swimmers. And if you have not visited the Oklahoma City Bombing National Memorial, then you have missed a very moving experience and reminder. There could be plenty to do if they come with you.

Please visit the event web site, http://herald.ansteorra.org/ahss/, to review classes and site and event information. Class schedule will post this evening.

There is no feast and no lunch. Site is adjacent to a restaurant and hotel row and the event takes an hour and a half break for midday food. A list of nearby hotels will be posted soon.

The event is a dress for medieval success event. Unless you are fighting, we are indoors and air conditioned. Be aware that many of the scribal classes involve hands on practice, so be careful of dripping paint on your best clothes.

Respectfully,
Maitre Etienne de St. Amaranth
