I'm glad this thread is still floating around. I spent last weekend wirth a
friend who is a squire and told showed him some of the things about squires.
The following are HIS words and feelings about being a squire: Thanks...
Moriel^^^

"After a lot of thinking I have decided to make a few comments on the subject
of squires. I (Ld. Anas) am squire to Sir Arenvald Kief av Kiersted. Before
Sir Kief I was squire to Sir Doran MacCollum. Upon Sir Doran's leaving
kingdom a few years back, Sir Kief accepted me as his squire.

When I was made a squire neither Sir Doran or Sir Kief planned any ceremony.
Instead each man had a meaningful talk with me about responsibilities,
attitudes and other words of wisdom which I keep close to my heart.

As for my squire's belts my first one was woven by the then Lady Moriel
Arenvaldsdochter of Raven's Fort. It was one of her first pieces of weaving
which to this day makes it all the more special. My other two belts I made for
myself out of leather. Neither of my knights have ever given me a red belt.
Sir Doran gave me a rattan sword when he made me his squire, and Sir Kief
gave me a spur when he made me his squire.

For the record I still think of Sir Doran and his lady, Anna, as friends. I
respect the fact that he let me go to another knight rather then keep me in
limbo when he had moved so far away (Washington state). Sir Doran and Sir
Kief have never used me or my lady-wife, Erika, as slave labor to set up
their encampments or for "step&fetch" jobs. For anyone to suggest such a
thing would be childish.

Due to my mundane job I have been unable to train as much as I should on my
fighting skills and attending events. I serve my knight by my service to the
Barony of Raven's Fort, my Baron and Baroness, and with my involvement in
the College of Herald's. I have also been known to help the good folk of the
Shire of Tempio. I mention these to show that these are things I do to serve
but NOT because I was told to. I do these things freely and from my heart."

Long Life,
Lord Anas Ibn Haroun Adb-al Zaki (vis_ldb at pip.shsu)
