Shield Hooks

I'm building my first 9-foot fiberglass war spears & would like recipes for
shield hooks. 

A friend told me about taping a tennis ball to the shaft. Yet another
recommended a shark fin made of hard foam/leather/tape. And I've seen photos
of spears equipped with what looks like a 6-8" stright hook made of what
looks like pipe insulation-covered rattan.

What's your preference & why? Materials, construction, DIMENSIONS, distance
from tip?
